Troubleshooting Email Segments That Don't Appear in Mailchimp
This article explains what to do if an email segment created in Alpine does not appear in Mailchimp or appears with no contacts assigned.
OverviewThe Create Email Segment feature allows you to send a list of constituents from Alpine to Mailchimp for campaign targeting.
When an email segment is created, Alpine sends the segment to Mailchimp as a tag. Mailchimp then associates the contacts in that segment with the newly created tag.
Because these actions happen separately, it's normal to briefly see a tag in Mailchimp with no contacts assigned while processing completes.
What to ExpectMost email segments appear in Mailchimp within 5–10 minutes.
For larger segments containing thousands of contacts, processing may take longer.
If a segment still shows 0 contacts or does not appear after approximately one hour, additional troubleshooting may be needed.
Verify Your Mailchimp ConnectionA disconnected Mailchimp integration is the most common reason segments fail to appear.
To verify your connection:
- Navigate to Settings.
- Select Integrations.
- Open Mailchimp.
- Confirm the integration is connected and functioning properly.
If your Mailchimp connection is disconnected, reconnect the integration and allow the next sync cycle to complete.
Confirm Contacts Have Email AddressesOnly constituents with valid email addresses can be added to a Mailchimp audience.
If your segment contains contacts without email addresses, those contacts cannot be synced to Mailchimp and will not be included in the tag.
Verify the Correct Mailchimp AudienceEmail segments are sent to the audience configured in your Mailchimp integration settings.
If you recently changed audiences in Mailchimp, the tag may have been created in a different audience than the one you're currently viewing.
Check your Mailchimp audiences and confirm you're looking at the audience connected to Alpine.
Allow Additional Time for Large SegmentsLarge segments may require additional processing time before all contacts are assigned to the tag.
If segment creation normally takes only a few minutes but is consistently taking significantly longer, please contact support so we can investigate.
Contacting SupportIf your segment still has not appeared or continues to show no contacts after sufficient processing time, please contact your Customer Success Manager.
Including the following information will help us troubleshoot more quickly:
- The name of the email segment
- The date and time the segment was created
- The approximate number of contacts in the segment
- A screenshot of the tag in Mailchimp showing the contact count
- Whether the contacts were already present in your Mailchimp audience
This information helps us determine whether the issue is related to the integration connection, audience configuration, or processing delays.

Mailchimp processes tag creation and contact assignment separately. It's normal for the tag to appear first and populate with contacts shortly afterward.
How long should I wait before troubleshooting?
Most segments populate within 5–10 minutes. Large segments may take longer. If a segment has not populated after approximately one hour, follow the troubleshooting steps above.
Will contacts without email addresses be added to the segment?
No. Mailchimp requires an email address for audience membership, so contacts without email addresses cannot be synced.
