How to Create a New Stewardship Automation Touchpoint
Overview
This guide walks you through creating a new automated stewardship touchpoint in Humanitru, from naming your rule to selecting a trigger and configuring your delivery action.
When to Use This GuideUse this guide when you want to add a new automated outreach rule to your stewardship program — for example, setting up an automatic thank-you email for first-time donors or a task reminder for a donor's giving anniversary.
Step-by-Step InstructionsPart A: Open the Touchpoint Creation Flow
- Navigate to the Stewardship module by clicking Stewardship in the left-hand navigation menu.
- Click the Add Touchpoint button in the upper-left corner of the Touchpoints page.
- A new configuration modal opens with empty WHEN and THEN sections ready for you to configure.

Part B: Configure the WHEN Trigger
- In the WHEN section, select the trigger type from the dropdown menu. Options include: First Donation, Donation Anniversary, Giving Milestone, Membership Anniversary, and more.
- Set any additional trigger parameters. For example, if you select Giving Milestone, you will enter the dollar amount threshold (e.g., $500, $1,000, $5,000).
- Optionally add a delay to the trigger. For example, you might want the action to fire 1 day after the triggering event rather than immediately.

When Configuration
Part C: Configure the THEN Delivery Action
- In the THEN section, select your delivery channel: Email, SMS, Task, or Internal Note.
- If you selected Email, choose an email template from the template library or create a new one. Customize the subject line and body content as needed.
- If you selected Task, assign the task to a staff member and write the task description (e.g., Call [Constituent Name] to thank them for their milestone gift).
- If you selected SMS, compose your text message. Keep it under 160 characters for best delivery.

Then Configuration
Part D: Save and Set Status
- Enter a clear, descriptive name for your touchpoint in the Name field (e.g., First Donation Thank You or $1,000 Milestone Celebration).
- Click Save to create the touchpoint. It will now appear in your touchpoint dashboard.

- You can now adjust the status of your touchpoint by clicking on the icons in the touchpoint dashboard. Choose Dry Run to test the trigger without sending actual messages, or Active to begin automation immediately. If you chose Dry Run, navigate to the touchpoint's log after a few days to review simulated triggers and verify the logic before switching to Active.

Pro Tips / Common Mistakes- Always start new touchpoints in Dry Run mode. This gives you time to verify the trigger conditions and preview the output before any real messages are sent.
- Use specific, action-oriented names for your touchpoints. Avoid vague names like Touchpoint 1 — instead, use names like First Gift Thank You Email or $5K Milestone Staff Alert.
- Make sure your email templates include merge fields (like constituent name and gift amount) so messages feel personal, not generic.
